Friday, March 26, 2021 -- The U.S. U-23 Men's National Team is just one victory away from qualifying for its first Olympics since 2008, and Arizona's Justen Glad (Tucson) has had a massive hand in helping the team get to this spot.
In group play, Glad started and played the full 90 in the U-23's 1-0 victory over Costa Rica and 4-0 victory over the Dominican Republic, in which he completed all 97 of his passes. With those two victories in hand, the U.S. booked their ticket to the semifinals.
In the final group play match, U-23 head coach Jason Kries decided to sit Glad against Mexico, which saw the U.S. suffer a 1-0 loss. The outcome of the loss against Mexico meant that the U.S. would finish as the runner-up in the group and would play Honduras, the winner of Group B, in the semifinals.
Now, all the U-23 team has to do is defeat Honduras and the Olympics ticket is booked as two countries will represent the CONCACAF at the Olympics this summer.
To give you an idea of how long it has been since the U.S. qualified for the Olympics, all of the following players were on the team and under the age of 23: Michael Bradley, Jozy Altidore, Sax McCarty, Stu Holden, Brad Guzan, Robbie Rogers, Sacha Kljestan, Freddy Adu.
