ARIZONA SOCCER ASSOCIATION TEAMS WITH GRAND CANYON UNIVERSITY TO HOST INAUGURAL YOUTH FUTSAL CLASSIC
Indoor soccer tournament benefits Students Inspiring Students scholarship fund
PHOENIX (Oct. 23, 2019) -- Arizona Soccer Association and Grand Canyon University are teaming up for the inaugural GCU Futsal Classic on Jan. 4-5. The fun and fast two-day indoor soccer tournament will take place inside GCU’s new 10-court, 136,000-square-foot Canyon Activity Center. The diversity of activities at the Canyon Activity Center is just as impressive as its size, which will allow multiple 5-on-5 teams to play at once.
The event is open to boys and girls teams ages U7-U14 (for non-high school players) throughout Arizona. NOTE: Players enrolled in high school are not permitted to participate in this event. Registration deadline is Dec. 16. Teams can register here.
Proceeds from the Futsal Classic will benefit GCU’s Students Inspiring Students scholarship fund. The SIS full-tuition scholarships, with the support of business and philanthropic leaders, are available to students with limited financial means who seek academic assistance at GCU’s free Learning Lounge sites. Those scholarship recipients then pay it forward as college students by tutoring and mentoring the next generation of students behind them in the Learning Lounge.
"This is going to be a great opportunity for youth players across the state to enjoy what will be a great weekend on the beautiful Grand Canyon University campus," said Rick Kelsey, Arizona Soccer Association CEO. "Earlier this year, the GCU men's soccer team held an ASA youth night at one of their home matches. The turnout from our youth players was absolutely incredible and they had an unforgettable night. We're looking forward to strengthening the soccer partnerships between both organizations."
“Our goal is to engage and build up the local community,” said GCU men’s soccer coach Schellas Hyndman. “When we bring youth onto our campus, it provides a memorable experience that ignites the dream of attending college and earning academic and athletic scholarships. Teaming up with Arizona Soccer Association benefits the SIS scholarship which is just one way for students to achieve those dreams.”
